How to Tell If Palm Trees Need More Water

Water a newly planted palm tree every day for the first week. Switch to every other day for the second week, then to watering it 3 times a week. Keep a watering schedule on your calendar so you know when to add more water to the soil.

Insert a soil probe into the ground around your palm tree. Push the probe in as far as it will go, then twist it and pull it out. Check the condition of the soil from the probe. If the soil is still moist, you do not need to water the palm tree. If the soil is dry, you should water the palm until the soil is damp.

Use a moisture meter to check the soil and determine when to water your palm tree. Water the tree when the moisture meter shows the soil has begun to dry out.

Tailor the amount of water you give your palm tree to the season. Water the palm tree a bit more in the summertime and use a bit less water in the winter.

Give your palm tree a drink early in the morning or late in the evening, when the sun is not too hot. Watering the palm tree in the heat of the day can cause the fronds to burn.
