How to Remove a Small Tree With a Stump Bucket

Sometimes a property owner is faced with the task of removing an unwanted tree from the ground in an effort to clear the way for construction or new landscaping. Removing trees and tree stumps may seem to be a tedious, back-breaking undertaking. However, with tractor attachments, like a stump bucket -- essentially a metal shovel to cut through the soil and take out the root system -- removing the stump can be done with ease.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the stump bucket to your tractor or Bobcat bulldozer as directed by the manufacturer's instructions. This method varies, depending on the manufacturer of your particular model of bucket; but generally speaking, a socket wrench is all that's needed to secure the bucket's retaining bolts to the support arms of the vehicle.

    • 2

Cut the small tree to about waist height with a hand or power saw so that the tree is at a manageable height and won't topple over or hit bystanders in the immediate area. Clear away rocks or debris close to the trunk so that you can get a better visual on where to aim the bucket. If desired, use a shovel to dig away and access the location of the largest root, which is where you want to aim the end of the bucket.

    • 3

Ask any bystanders to stand at least 15 feet away from the work area for safety reasons. Fire up the tractor and aim the point end of the stump bucket about 2 feet away from the trunk or directly at the exposed main root. Drive forward with the bucket a few inches from the ground then slowly push the bucket into the soil until the lip is underground.

Engage the lift and drive forward again; this will push the lip under the root of the tree's stump. You should hear the sound of roots snapping. Engage the lift again to elevate it from the soil, ripping the stump out of the ground. Reverse the vehicle with the bucket still elevated to remove the tree.

Mix one part salt to one part water and pour this mixture over the exposed roots for a few days to kill them off and prevent the tree from reestablishing itself. Wait about six weeks before attempting to re-plant.
