Travel to places in the Mississippi Valley region, particularly in Ohio. The trees grow in very fertile soils. The tree grows as tall as 50 feet and is from 2 to 3 feet around.
Look for a tree with a quintet of broad, flat leaves in an oblong shape. The leaves are palm-like in formation.
Find the tree in the spring when it is flowering. The flowers are yellow and frilly-looking, forming a cylindrical shape.
Tie a ribbon around the tree when you find it, so that when you come back in the fall, you can find it easily.
Look for groupings of the husked nut in the fall. The nuts are about the size of golf balls, cream-colored and covered in small spines.
Look for the leaves to turn from orange to red in the fall.
