How to Estimate Tree Work

Tree work no longer just involves an axe and someone yelling timber, especially when you live in a populated area. Tree removal is now something of a science and includes several variant factors that should be considered before asking a tree crew to start working. Determining an estimate for your tree removal before calling a company will make the process quicker and may even save you some money.

Determine the size range of your tree. Removal of small trees can be as little as $100 where as large trees can be upwards of $1,500. Small trees fall under 30 ft. ($125-$437); medium trees fall between 30-to-60 ft. ($175-$900); large trees fall between 60-to-80 ft. ($400-$1,000); and extra large trees are anything above 80 ft. ($962-$1,400+).

Determine whether or not you want the stump removed as well. Stump removal is usually included in tree removal fee, but should be confirmed when receiving estimates. Stump removal involves grinding down the stump in the ground turning it into sawdust. Small stumps cost about $75 for removal. Larger stumps may cost up to $350.

Locate the range of root growth surrounding the tree. Stump removal will usually include the removal of surrounding surfaced roots, but will not include the removal of the entire root system. Removing all roots, especially for large root systems, may require you to contact the city to ensure no damage is done to sidewalks and underground piping.

Estimate the amount of cleanup the crew will have to do after cutting down the tree. This includes chopping branches, wood chipping and hauling debris away. Some cutting crews may ask if you would like them to split blocks into firewood for an additional fee. A company will either charge by the job or by the hour for cleanup and hauling. A small tree may run about $350 for cleanup and hauling for a complete job, or around $65-$150 when paying by the hour.
