Instructions

    • 1

Select a warm spring or summer day to dig up the tree if transplanting. Encourage quick root integration by removing and replanting on a day when the soil is warm. If you don't plan to transplant the palm you can remove it anytime.

    • 2

Measure a 2-foot circle around the trunk of the palm with a measuring tape. Mark the circle on the ground with spray paint.

    • 3

Water the ground around the palm tree to loosen the soil and hydrate the tree roots.

    • 4

Place the shovel in the soil, starting at the line you painted. Scoop the dirt out of the circle to free up the root ball. Continue to dig until the root ball is completely uncovered. The root ball may be 2 to 4 feet wide.

    • 5

Lay a heavy tree gently on the ground, allowing the root ball to ease out of the hole. Lift small trees up and out of the hole.

    • 6

Cover the root ball in burlap then soak the root ball with water. Transplant the queen palm as soon as possible.
