How to Cover a Lemon Tree to Prevent Frost

A solid freeze is deadly for sensitive lemon trees but these fragrant citrus specimens can survive the occasional frost if growers are prepared. A guide published by the University of California reports that both lime and lemon trees are highly sensitive to freezing temperatures. Pay extra attention to trees that have no wind shield or surrounding trees. You can't just hope for the best -- you must protect your lemon crop. Cover lemon trees to keep needed warmth near the root and trunk of the trees.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear away mulch and leaves from the base of the tree, using a rake. Mound up dirt around the root bulb of the tree to protect the roots from freezing. Removing debris will help keep the tree warm once you've wrapped it.

    • 2

Wrap the trunk of the tree, starting at the base, with burlap material. Use sections of twine to tie the burlap to the tree. Cover the lower part of the branches, leaving the top bare.

    • 3

String Christmas tree lights over the top of the tree. Use outdoor lights, but avoid using electrical lights if the tree is wet or there is standing water on the ground. Lights will keep the tree warm.
