How to Grow a Tree on a Slope

When planting a tree on a slope, take precautions that aren't necessary when planting on flat land. If not, the tree grows poorly because of water runoff. When a tree is planted on a slope without the proper preparation, water runoff flows down the slope before it being absorbed by the soil. This prevents the tree from getting needed water. When digging a plot for the tree, shape it to accommodate both the tree and a water basin.

Instructions

    • 1

Dig a hole in the ground where you want to plant your tree. It should be the same depth as the root ball and at least twice as wide.

    • 2

Standing downhill of the hole, looking uphill, dig slightly farther into the soil on the hole’s far side. This helps the hole retain water.

    • 3

From this same position, build a soil mound on top of the grass just outside the hole’s bottom rim. This prevents runoff and helps the ground retain water flowing downhill.

    • 4

Plant the tree and refill the whole with a 50/50 planting soil mix. Scatter mulch around the tree’s base and over the soil hump you created.
