Insert a drill bit with a 3-inch diameter into the drill. Use a drill-bit extension on the drill to make the bit at least 12 inches long.
Find the distance halfway between the trunk and the drip line. You do not want to make holes before this point because you are more likely to drill into large roots.
Drill a hole into the soil. Make the hole at least 12 inches deep.
Move over 3 feet and make sure you are still half way between the trunk and the drip line. Make another hole that is at least 12 inches deep. Repeat this step all the way around the tree.
Move 12 to 18 inches closer to the drip line. Find a location in between two of the holes already drilled. Drill a new hole, at least 12 inches deep. Move over 3 feet and repeat all the way around the tree.
Move another 12 to 18 inches closer to the drip line. Find a location in between two holes you just made and make another hole. Repeat all the way around the tree. Continue in this manner until you reach just beyond the drip line.
Fill each of the holes with peat moss or wood chips. This prevents the holes from filling up with dirt, while the peat moss or wood chips maintain healthy aeration.
