How to Kill a Shrub

The most environmentally friendly way to get rid of a shrub is to dig it up. However, if you don't want to do that, there are many ways to kill it, and not simply by not watering it until it withers away. There are better ways to get rid of bushes that are clogging your landscape or causing allergic reactions.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the branches so you can see the trunk system of the shrub. Pour salt on it--enough for it to seep in. This will cause the bush to die.

    • 2

Cut the shrub as low to the ground as possible with a chainsaw. Buy a copper pipe from the hardware store and stick it in the center of the stump. The roots will die and disintegrate.

    • 3

Cover the shrub with black plastic sheeting. It will take a while, but it will eventually die from a lack of sunlight and heat.
