How to Construct a Rose Trellis

A rose trellis can add a beautiful architectural element to your garden. It also provides a good backdrop and support for a heavy rose bush. Trellises must be large and strong to bear the weight of the bushes, and can be leaned up against a fence or wall for extra support. Different materials can be used for different types of plants and trellis shapes. Wood is the most attractive and simplest material to use, offering plenty of versatility.

Things You'll Need

  • Four wood U-channels
  • Four 2 x 4s
  • Table saw

Instructions

    • 1

Determine a size for trellis frame. Add two extra inches to length and width to accommodate the lattice panel and U-channels. Measure 2 x 4s for frame and cut both these and U-channels to same length.

    • 2

Drill holes in U-channel. This will prevent the U-channels from splitting when attached to the 2 x 4s. Use holes to screw U-channels into 2 x 4s. Tighten the screws so they are snug.

    • 3

Cut each combined U-channel and 2 x 4. Set your table saw to cut at a 45-degree angle. Cut each end of all the edges of the frame. Make sure they are at the correct angle so they will fit together during assembly.

    • 4

Trim wood lattice panel to fit inside frame. Measure the opening of the frame, factoring in the depth of the grooves of the U-channel. Add a quarter of an inch to account for expansion in humid weather.

    • 5

Screw trellis together. Clamp two sides of a corner of the frame. Screw the pieces together. Screw a third section of the frame onto the other two, making a U shape. Slide the lattice panel into the grooves of the U-channel. Attach final edge of the frame, making sure everything fits snugly.

    • 6

Strengthen the lattice. Lattice is flexible and will easily pop out of the frame if hit. To prevent this and to make the trellis stronger for the rose bush, drive one and a half inch screws at an angle into the lattice and through the body of the U-channel.

Paint lattice. Prime with one coat of an exterior primer. Then apply two coats of exterior latex paint in any color to customize your trellis.
