How to Plant Blueberry Plants With Bone Meal

Blueberries belong to the Ericaceae or heath family. Many people love these little berries, whether in muffins, pancakes or just eating them right off the tree. For the most part, they are easy to grow. Depending on the variety, they will produce fruit from early in the season to late in the season. Blueberry plants love acidic soils. Chances are, if you have rhododendrons or azaleas growing in the area in which you want to plant your blueberry, the soil should be acidic enough.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate a sunny location for your blueberry. Dig a hole that is twice as wide and twice as deep as the root ball on your blueberry.

    • 2

Mix into the soil two parts garden soil, two parts chopped, composted leaves, two parts coarse builder's sand and one part compost.

    • 3

Scoop out an indention at the bottom of the hole you just dug. Into this indention, place a scoop of bone meal.

    • 4

Fill the entire hole with water. Allow the water to drain out naturally.

    • 5

Add some of the mixed soil to the bottom of the hole so when you plant your blueberry, it will be a little higher than the ground. Don't worry, the soil will settle and the blueberry plant will be at ground level.

    • 6

Remove the blueberry bush from the container in which it came. If the roots can be seen along the outside, tease them out with your fingers. If you don't do this, they will continue to wrap themselves around the root ball instead of branching out into the ground. Plant the blueberry into the ground.

    • 7

Backfill the hole, tamping the soil to eliminate air pockets.

    • 8

Water the blueberry plant thoroughly. Make sure the soil of the blueberry is even with the ground.

    • 9

Place a layer of chipped pine tree bark and needles over the top of the soil. This will keep moisture in the ground and gives the blueberry the correct pH level.
