Choose a site that gets plenty of sunlight. You can choose a spot with partial shade if needed due to space limitations. You should try to plant the shrub during the early spring months.
Select an area that will allow for the mature plant to reach its full spread, about 8 feet or more.
Dig a hole approximately two times the width of the root ball according to the website marthastewart.com. The depth of the hole should allow the top of the root ball to be even with the soil line.
Fill in the space surrounding the root ball with soil, slightly mounding it on top.
Remove any fabric that is around the root ball, unless it is burlap cloth. You can leave the burlap on the root ball, but loosen it after you have placed it in the hole.
Form a ridge with dirt around the edge of the hole to catch water in order to keep the plant moist.
Place about 2 inches of mulch over the top of the area you dug.
