How to Prune Red Prince Weigela

The red prince weigela is a shrub that has beautiful, red bell-shaped blooms in the summer months. The leaves are a medium green shade and typically about 4 1/2 inches in length. It grows to a height and width of approximately 6 to 9 feet and grows best in partial to full sunlight. The shrub thrives in a moist, but not soggy soil. It is suitable for borders or to use as a shrub plant and the fragrant blossoms attract hummingbirds throughout the summer months.

Instructions

    • 1

Pinch the stem ends of your young red prince weigela plant. This will enable it to create more branches and prevent having to prune it severely as it ages.

    • 2

Increase air circulation and allow more sunlight into the plant by thinning it, according to the Backyard Gardener website. This means cut some branches back to the main trunk. Begin this process by removing any diseased or damaged limbs and then thin more branches if necessary.

    • 3

Use electric or hand pruning shears to maintain a pleasing shape on your red prince weigela. Annual shaping will keep it looking attractive in your landscape for years to come.

    • 4

Reduce the overall size of the shrub by cutting away no more than 1/3 of the shrub. Remember to remove inside, as well as outside limbs, for the most effective pruning.
