How to Find Desert Shrubs

Desert shrubs can make all the difference in landscaping desert climates. From prickly pears to sand sagebrush, low-water shrubs and bushes are a viable option for hot, dry climates. Most desert shrubs grow well in sandy soil and require very little water. These plants serve desert wildlife by providing shelter from the hot sun, as well as berries and seeds for food. Finding desert shrubs is not difficult. It simply requires knowing what you're looking for and where to look.

Identify the specific types of desert shrubs you'd like to purchase. There are many different varieties available. Some popular desert shrubs include: fairy duster, jojoba, prickly pear, sand sagebrush, red barberry and desert bird of paradise.

Search online for desert shrubs. Find online nurseries and locate desert shrubs by growing zone. Search for shrubs that grow in zones 7 to 9. These growing zones are located in desert and low-water climates.

Visit a local nursery. Desert shrubs will be on display if you live in a desert climate. Ask specifically for desert shrubs because other types of shrubs and plants will be on display as well. If the desired shrub is not available, ask if it can be ordered. Most nurseries will order plants for customers upon request.
