How to Plant Berberis

Berberis comes in several different varieties, such as barberry, wintergreen barberry and Japanese barberry. When picking out the right one that will grow in your location, talk to someone at the local garden center, or contact your local extension agent. Most varieties of berberis have scented flowers. The foliage ranges from purple, red, green to dark green. Berberis is easy to grow and care for because you don’t need to fertilize or prune this shrub.

  Find a location to plant the berberis shrub that has plenty of sun, although if you choose an evergreen variety, you can plant it in an area with partial shade.

  Dig a hole that is twice the diameter of the berberis pot. Keep the depth the same as the container.

  Fill the hole with water. Leave this to drain naturally.

  Mix equal amounts of compost and soil.

  Remove the berberis from the container. Check the roots to see if they are compacted and growing around the pot. If they are, tease them loose from the soil, otherwise they will continue to wrap themselves around the root ball. This will choke your shrub to death.

  Place the shrub in the hole after the water has drained away.

  Pull the amended soil into the hole. Tamp the soil down gently when the hole is filled.

  Water the berberis thoroughly.

  Place a 3- to 4-inch layer of mulch around the shrub. This will help the soil retain moisture and keep down weeds.
