What Is a Fast-Growing, Dense Hedge That Reaches 20 Feet?

Common along interstates in the Western and Northwestern United States, Pacific wax myrtle (Myrica californica) can reach heights of 20 feet. It grows quickly, and--when planted as a hedge--it makes a great screen.
  1. Leaves and Flowers

    • Pacific wax myrtle leaves are toothed, waxy and about 3 inches long. Purple or red flowers cluster along the stem. The tall shrub is known for its sweet smell.

    Growing Needs

    • Pacific wax myrtle grows in sun or partial shade. It can tolerate very moist or very dry conditions. It is native to the Pacific Coast and is hardy to USDA climate zone 7.

    Fun Facts

    • Though known for a sweet aroma, the leaves of Pacific wax myrtle are not as strong-smelling as those of its cousin, the northern bayberry (Myrica pensylvanica), when crushed. Pacific wax myrtle berries are also not used for scented candle making, due to a low content of aromatic wax.
