Roses

• Roses have long been a favorite of gardeners who wished to add a splash of red color to their landscape. There is a large selection of red blooming rose bushes to choose from, with new hybrids introduced each year. From tiny miniature rose bushes to full size bushes and climbing rose bushes, should you need to cover a fence or wall, a rose bush in your landscape will give you red blossoms almost continually throughout the growing season.

Azalea

• If you have shaded areas or high acidic soil, an azalea bush not only will thrive in those conditions, but reward you with colorful blossoms in the spring and early summer. The formosa azalea species can often be found in traditional southern gardens and will have large blossoms in a variety of colors, including red. Kurume azaleas, known for their hardiness, are more suited to USDA zones 6 to 9. The kurume is an evergreen dwarf azalea that is available in a red blossom and other bright-colored flowers.

Rose of Sharon

• Despite its name, the rose of Sharon bush is not a member of the rose family, but belongs to the hibiscus family. The rose of Sharon deciduous shrub is easy to grow in USDA zones 5 to 8 and will bloom in late summer through fall. The cup-shaped flowers can cover the bush, making a brilliant display of red, but are also available in a rainbow of colorful blooms. The rose of Sharon named 'Lucy' has large, double-petal, brilliant red flowers.

Honeysuckle

• People often associate honeysuckle with a white or cream colored flower, but honeysuckle bushes come in a variety of colors, including red. The Lonicera cultivar of honeysuckle bushes have several red blooming varieties, like the Arnolds red and Scarlet Trumpet. Honeysuckle bushes will bloom all season with fragrant blossoms that attract butterflies and hummingbirds.
