When Does Nannyberry Viburnum Flower?

Nannyberry viburnum (Viburnum lentago) is a many-stemmed, deciduous shrub growing to 16 feet and native to eastern North America. Capable of being part of shrub borders, hedges, privacy screens or barriers, nannyberry viburnum also has an added benefit -- it flowers.
  1. Time Frame

    • The flowering period of nannyberry viburnum takes place during the middle to the end of May, notes the University of Connecticut's online Plant Database. Nannyberry viburnum's flowers result in a berry that undergoes numerous color changes before ripening in autumn to a bluish-black color.

    Flower Features

    • Lacking any appreciable aroma, the flowers of nannyberry viburnum are white. The flowers emerge in cymes (flat-topped groupings) as wide as 4½ inches. The flowers are small; after they finish blooming, prune the shrub, advises the Missouri Botanical Garden website. The new flower buds for the next growing season form during the summer months.

    Growing Conditions

    • Consider using the nannyberry viburnum for its flowering effect if you live from U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 2 through 8. The plant has cold hardiness and grows in both sunny spots and partly shady sites. Nannyberry viburnum is an easy shrub for transplanting and it takes to dry and damp areas with equal ease.
