Will Tree Peonies Thrive in an Area Shaded by Trees?

Tree peonies, or Mountain peonies, are shrubs, unlike the more commonly known herbaceous peonies. Tree peonies grow up to 5 feet high and 5 feet wide and have larger blooms than herbaceous peonies. With proper care, they can provide decades of enjoyment.
  1. Shade

    • Tree peonies will do well in areas partially shaded by trees. According to Clemson University Cooperative Extension, too much sun can damage the flower petals, so dappled shade or afternoon shade is ideal.

    Space

    • Tree peonies need some space to grow. They don't like to be planted near other tree or shrub roots. To account for their mature size, give them 3 feet of space on all sides when planted.

    Soil

    • Tree peonies like rich, high quality, slightly alkaline soils. They grow best in well-drained soil, which helps to prevent fungus growth. You may have to add iron, in the form of iron sulfate to the soil to deepen the color of the flowers and improve plant health.

    Caution

    • Do not cut back tree peonies. Unlike herbaceous peonies, they will not grow back from the ground in the spring.
