Endless Summer Hydrangea Colors

The Endless Summer hybrid of bigleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) grows between 3 and 4 feet high, suitable for hedges, foundation plants or group plantings. The gardener can affect the color of the flowers by changing the plant's growing conditions.
  1. Types

    • The pH levels of the soil you plant Endless Summer hydrangeas in directly affect what colors the blossoms turn out to be. For example, when planted in very acidic soil, the flowers are bluish. Slightly acidic ground or soil of an alkaline nature results in shades of pink and lilac.

    Effects

    • By adding aluminum sulfate to the area around an Endless Summer hydrangea, you can grow flowers that are a deeper shade of blue. Adding lime to the ground around the shrub yields pinker blossoms on the plant.

    Time Frame

    • To affect the color of the flowers, add aluminum sulfate or lime to the ground around your Endless Summer cultivar during the latter part of autumn or the beginning of spring. The flowers will appear beginning in July and continue to bloom into September. Pruning away any weak stems or stems damaged by winter weather improves the appearance of the shrub.
