How to Grow Evergreen Hedges Fast

Evergreen hedges are an effective way to create a living privacy screen, reduce noise or block an unappealing view. They are also an interesting way to divide a yard and add depth to a landscape. Because many fast-growing hedges can be short-lived or weak overall, it is best to intersperse your hedge plantings with perennials, other longer-lived shrubs or trees.

  Purchase shrubs that are almost full grown to reduce the amount of growth time needed. You can purchase shrubs almost full-grown from area nurseries. This is a more expensive option, but the fastest way to get hedges full size quickly.

  Fertilize your evergreen hedges any time from early spring to mid-summer to help them grow faster. Use a complete, all-purpose fertilizer such as a 10-8-6 NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium).

  Test the soil and make sure soil conditions are appropriate for an evergreen. Evergreens prefer a more acidic soil. Adding a mulch of sphagnum peat can help enhance the acidity of your soil and encourage faster growth.
