How to Trim a Pom Pom Tree

Pom poms grow about 3 to 8 feet tall and have no foliage below the top and middle balls. They can be grouped together or stand alone to create a landscaping accent. Regular pruning or trimming promotes healthy growth in pom poms as with other trees and shrubs. To trim a pom pom, you will only need a couple shaping tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Envision the shape you want for the pom pom tree or consult landscaping books and magazines.

    • 2

Remove the small branches that sprout from the main branches in the bulb with pruning shears. Start with the lower branches and work upward, taking note along the way of the overall forming shape. Leave about 6 to 8 inches of foliage on the ends of each branch.

    • 3

Stand back and look over the pom pom to determine which branches need cutting to form the shape you wish to create. This will help you shape the pom pom more efficiently.

    • 4

Begin cutting the ends of the branches with hedge shears to shape the pom pom. Start on one side and work your way around the tree until you reach the starting point. Step back often to ensure the tree is taking the correct shape and cuts are not lopsided.

Clean up any clippings with a leaf rake and place them in a landscaping or garbage bag. Trim every few months or as necessary to maintain the shape.
