How to Prune Goldmound Spirea

Goldmound spirea is a small shrub that rarely grows taller than 3 feet. It is easy to grow in full sun and tolerates many soil types, except those that are very wet. The yellow foliage keeps the shrub attractive even after the pink flowers have gone for the season. Deadheading the flowers will encourage a second crop to bloom in the spring. Prune the bush as you would most other bushes, bearing in mind that the goldmound spirea is naturally mounding and doesn't require a lot of shaping.

Instructions

    • 1

Dip the blades of your pruning shears in rubbing alcohol or chlorine bleach before pruning. This will keep any disease you encounter from spreading to other parts of the bush.

    • 2

Cut away any dying or diseased branches any time of year.

    • 3

Prune the goldmound spirea in the winter or early spring as part of a regular maintenance plan for your shrubs.

    • 4

Thin out the center of the bush to keep the air circulating throughout the shrub. Since the goldmound spirea mounds naturally, it can start clumping up through the middle.

    • 5

Remove up to one-third of the shrub while pruning per season. Removing more than this can leave the shrub stressed and susceptible to pests and disease.
