How to Care for a Bridal Wreath Spirea

The Spiraea cantoniensis or bridal wreath spirea is a low-maintenance shrub that produces small, fine white flowers on thin, arching branches. The appearance is fountain-like when the tree is in full bloom. The shrubs grow best in full sun and are often used as border shrubs or hedges. When planted against a backdrop of darker foliage dense shrubs, the flowers display well. Once planted, the bridal wreath spirea requires little care except to mulch, water and prune on occasion.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant the shrub in spring or fall at least 2 feet from the nearest plant.

    • 2

Fertilize the shrub with at least a 1-inch layer of compost around the base of each shrub every spring, and then apply a fresh layer of mulch to reduce weed growth and retain moisture.

    • 3

Water the shrubs weekly if there is less than 1 inch of rain in a week's time. Water the shrub thoroughly each time and fully saturate the roots to promote deep root growth.

    • 4

Pinch dead or dying flowers off the shrub throughout the spring to encourage a second flowering.

    • 5

Cut dead or diseased branches any time of year. Prune the shrubs back in the early spring to promote flowering, reduce the shrub's size as needed, and cultivate its shape.
