How to Trim Shrubs & Trees in a Corkscrew Pattern

Every year the trees and shrubs in homeowners' yards get trimmed to keep them looking neat and healthy. Add a hint of sophistication to your landscape by trimming your bushes in a decorative style. "Topiary" is the term that describes trimming bushes into fun or artistic shapes. For shrubs or trees that are tall, narrow and bushy, a corkscrew pattern will help them look more stylish and less bulky. This pattern is achievable with the tools you have around your house as well as a keen eye.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the shrub to be trimmed. Since a corkscrew comes to a point at the top, make sure there is only one stem that protrudes from the top of the plant. Remove any other upward-pointing stems. Cut off any excess growth on the body of the shrub so no branches are sticking out on their own.

Set the pattern for the corkscrew using tape. Begin at the top of the tree and create a downward spiral toward the base. Take the time to fix the tape so it matches exactly how you want the spiral to look. If you do not feel comfortable creating the outline yourself, templates made from wire can be purchased online.

Follow the pattern, and begin to trim away the branches that are along the tape's path. Start at the top and only work on a couple inches at a time. Use hedge trimmers or shears to get all the way down to the trunk.

Brush away any loose branches, examine your work and begin to make touch-ups. Use a smaller pair of topiary shears to do this precise work. Only work on one area at a time, and take frequent breaks to step back and examine your work.

Water your shrub or tree every day, and cover it with a light cloth for the next couple of days, if possible, to prevent it from becoming damaged or dry.
