The Size of a Crape Myrtle

Crape myrtles are versatile deciduous shrubs, growing to a variety of heights depending on the species and cultivar. Crape myrtles lack tolerance to very cold climates, growing from U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zone 6 -- encompassing states such as Connecticut, Kentucky and Kansas -- into the warmer zones. When small, this shrub serves as ground cover; those as tall as 20 feet function as privacy screens.
  1. Small Crape Myrtles

    • Lagerstroemia indica "Delta Blush" is a heavy blooming variety of crape myrtle that grows no taller than 18 inches. Delta Blush generates pink flowers. Its small size allows its use as a container plant for patios, as well as for plantings along foundations and in rock gardens. Growing to as small as 9 inches, Lagerstroemia "Lafayette" is appropriate for hanging baskets. Lafayette has white-lavender flowers that bloom from the end of June into September.

    Medium Crape Myrtles

    • Use Lagerstroemia "Victor" as an informal hedge or specimen plant. It grows between 3 and 6 feet, features dark-red flowers and has red-brown bark. Its foliage turns shades of yellow and red in autumn. Brilliant red flowers highlighted by yellow centers are a staple of Lagerstroemia "Country Red." This crape myrtle cultivar matures between 4 and 10 feet high, with pale orange-yellow fall leaves. Like most crape myrtles, Country Red thrives in full sun.

    Medium Tall Crape Myrtles

    • Lagerstroemia "Tonto" is reliably hardy to USDA zones 6 and 7a, but in those zones sometimes dies to the ground before coming back in spring. In zone 7b and into warmer zones, the top survives the winter. The flowers on Tonto are fuchsia, its fall foliage is maroon and Tonto grows to 11 feet. Lagerstroemia indica "Muskogee" grows to 12 feet, with lavender flowers in clusters up to 10 inches long. Muskogee's height makes it suitable as a specimen plant, informal hedge or screen.

    Very Tall Crape Myrtles

    • Lagerstroemia "Yuma" is potentially 20 feet high. Yuma features resistance to powdery mildew, a common problem with crape myrtles. In the Deep South, Yuma is not difficult to grow as a small tree. Yuma flowers during July into September, producing lavender flowers of different shades. The leaves of Lagerstroemia "Natchez" change from dark green to red and orange in fall. Its flowers are white, blooming from July until fall begins. Natchez, especially in the warmer zones such as 8 and 9, may grow to 21 feet high, with a similar width.
