Planting Near Windows Help

Planting ornamental landscape material near windows can serve multiple purposes. Trees can shade sunny windows and lower cooling bills. Shrubs and perennials offer a pleasant view from the inside of the home. They also block unsightly views, such as a neighbor's garbage cans.
  1. Appropriate Plant Material

    • Decide before planting what the purpose of the planting will be. Then choose appropriate plant material to accomplish your purpose. The right plant for the spot will be one that requires the conditions that exist, such as available sunlight, soil type and drainage.

    Leave Room for Growth

    • Survey the area to be landscaped from the window and then again outside. Allow enough room for growth of trees and shrubs. Decide if you want the window to be partially blocked by the plant material. In most cases, you will not want the entire window blocked and will not want a tree or shrub growing against the house or window. Learn the size of mature plant material and allow room for its growth.

    Remember the Roots

    • Also take care that large, growing roots are not in an area that might overtake a septic or sewer system or invade the foundation or basement. Consider these points when planning and planting for a window view.
