How to Make a Spiral Topiary Shape for Ivy Plants

Ivy is a fast-growing plant with deep-green, triangular leaves that bush out to a full and healthy look. Besides making a good plant for a pot or basket, ivy may be grown into a topiary shape. One popular shape gardeners use is a spiral shape. Growing plants into a spiral shape takes time but many plant-growers find topiary growing rewarding. Spiral-shaped topiaries add interest to a walkway path and make natural anchors for empty flowerbeds. Create this spirally shape using ivy for a classic garden look.

Instructions

    • 1

Snip 1 to 3 yards of 16-gauge wire from the roll using wire cutters. Shape and bend one end of the spiral into a half circle.

    • 2

Lay the half-circle end of the wire on the ground. Continue to bend and shape the wire making a spiral on the ground. Keep the wire flat to the ground so when you lift the inner portion it will spring into a spiral.

    • 3

Connect the inner end of the wire to a 1-yard long wooden dowel. Choose a wooden dowel that is at least 1/2 inch wide for a sturdy pole. Use a 2-inch piece of wire to connect the spiral form to the dowel. Wrap the wire around the wooden dowel until it is secure.

    • 4

Poke the wooden dowel in the center of the ivy plant, without damaging the plant. Move the spiral around the ivy, gently wrapping the vines around the form. Use twine, not wire, for holding the vine in place. Do not force the vines to reach the entire length of the spiral form. Allow plants to grow into place.
