Border Hedge for Landscaping

Choose a shrub type that grows to the desired height needed. A border hedge that is excessively tall can create privacy within the garden, but may block sunlight to surrounding smaller plants. Consider the backyard's plant layout while determining which shrub to use.

Clear any weeds or undergrowth from the hedge's intended planting area by digging with a shovel or trowel.

Dig a hole, with a shovel or trowel, for each shrub seedling. Make sure the hole is deep enough to adequately support the stem and branches above ground. In addition, create the holes as close together as possible. This close positioning will create the border hedge barrier appearance as the shrubs grow over time.

Place each shrub seedling in its hole. Add a small amount of fertilizer to the soil surrounding the plant. Cover the roots and hole with soil using the trowel or shovel. Wet the area down with water using a watering can or hose.
