Instructions

    • 1

Select a Boston fern that is healthy with dark green foliage and no yellow or rotten branches.

    • 2

Decide how you want to plant your Boston fern. Do you want to plant it in the ground or in a hanging planter?

    • 3

If you choose a hanging planter, choose a pot at minimum twice the size of the Boston fern.

    • 4

Remove the fern from the pot you purchased it in. Loosen the roots if they feel tightly bundled. This will promote growth.

    • 5

Place new garden soil in the bottom of the pot and place the new fern into the new pot. Add soil around the fern to fill in the empty spaces. Lightly tamp to remove any air bubbles. Water generously.

    • 6

Pick a partly shaded or dappled spot in your garden if you choose to plant your fern outside. Make sure you are in a zone that the temperatures do not go below freezing and the humidity is above 50 percent.

    • 7

Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place your fern in the hole and fill it in with new garden soil.

    • 8

Fill in the spaces firmly with new soil and water thoroughly.
