How to Grow Pachysandra Ground Cover

Although a gardening columnist at the New York Times once referred to Pachysandra as "boring", it remains a favorite of gardeners all over the U.S. An evergreen ground cover, it is hardy, grows fast and fills in all those shady spots where nothing else seems to grow. Pachysandra will tolerate average soil but it does like a regular watering.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a shady spot in your garden.

    • 2

Loosen the soil, with your shovel, about 4 inches deep. Rake well to remove any large clods of soil, rocks and debris.

    • 3

Add a 3-inch layer of compost and work it into the soil.

    • 4

Use the trowel to dig a shallow hole, just enough to cover the roots of the pachysandra. Set the plants 6 inches apart. Tamp lightly around the base of the plants.

    • 5

Add mulch between plants. Water well, then water once a week during dry periods.
