What Are Hosta Flowers?

The hosta is a perennial flowering plant native to China, Korea and Japan. A very hardy species that tolerates shade well, the hosta produces flowers on long stalks that vary in color among the hundreds of different types.
  1. Considerations

    • Many hostas have large leaves.

Hostas are plants that gardeners and landscapers utilize for the beauty of the leaves rather than the flowers. The leaves are typically large and come in an array of colors, ranging from green to bluish to variegated combinations.

    Lily Family

    • The hosta is a member of the lily family. The flowers bloom on a mature plant during the summer months and resemble a miniature lily in their shape.

    Color

    • The color of hosta flowers depends on the species of hosta. Many are a light lavender color, while others are shades of white.

    Potential

    • Horticulturists constantly are breeding new cultivars of hosta in an effort to produce plants with the potential for larger and more attractive flowers. The more fragrant hosta flowers developed from a species named Hosta plantaginea, which has aromatic white flowers.

    Types

    • There are different types of flowering plants that go well in a landscape or garden with a hosta once it blooms in the summer. Impatiens, coleus and begonias frequently highlight a hosta in such a setting, while daffodils, tulips and crocus mix well with the hosta in spring.
