How to Decorate With Outdoor Urns

Outdoor decorations are often forgotten or pushed aside when designing the décor for your home, even though quality outdoor décor is key to a good first impression of your home. Outdoor urns are a great way to bring a cheerful, seasonal look to the outside of your home. Use rustic branches and foliage to decorate in the fall and winter months, and bright, colored flowers or flowered branches to decorate during the spring and summer months. Decorating with urns is simple and quick to do, but will give your outdoor décor a professional look and feel.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase two large outdoor urns from a garden supply store, or the garden section of WalMart, Lowe’s, or a similar store. Make sure the urn is made of nonporous, weather-resistant materials and is sturdy enough to handle the wind and rain. Fiberglass is a common material for outdoor urns because it is lightweight, yet won’t shatter like concrete.

    • 2

Place the urns outside on either side of your front door, or flanking the sides of the entrance to a garden area. You can also place them on opposing ends of a patio or across from each other on a pathway leading to your house.

    • 3

Collect long sticks or branches from your yard, or purchase artificial branches from a garden store. The branches should be long enough that they reach to the bottom of the urn and still stick up a few feet from the opening of the urn. For a more holiday look, spray paint the branches with gold or silver spray paint, or leave them unpainted for a natural, rustic look.

    • 4

Place the branches in the urn, allowing them to sit loosely. Arrange the branches so that the longer ones are towards the center of the urn and the shorter ones are around the edge of the opening.

    • 5

Add pieces of evergreen for the holiday season, and tie a thick ribbon around the mouth of the urn, or leave the natural wood branches for a simpler look throughout the fall and winter months. In the spring, add flowered branches for a brighter, cheerful look.
