Mildew Resistant Climbing Roses

Climbing roses can be a bright and beautiful addition to any landscaping plan, spreading their lush foliage and extravagant blooms over fences, trellises, archways or walls. However, these traditional beauties can fall victim to a variety of diseases, especially powdery mildew, which can cause extensive damage to both foliage and flowers. Using one of the many varieties of mildew-resistant climbing roses in your garden can reduce the risk of such problems, as well as the time and expense of maintaining your roses.
  1. Red

    • Red roses can make a spectacular show against a white fence or trellis, and a number of varieties that resist powdery mildew are available. Among these is the All Ablaze, which produces bright red double blossoms, and is a repeat bloomer. Dublin Bay is another mildew-resistant red climber, with blood red and fragrant double blossoms, also a repeat bloomer. For a more subdued red rose, the Danse de Feu is a good disease-resistant choice with brick-red double blossoms.

    White

    • For those who love white roses, plenty of mildew-resistant climbers are available from which to choose. Among these are the fragrant Mme. Alfred Carriere, a repeat bloomer with spectacular double blossoms, and the City of York, a white rose with semi-double blossoms. For a white climber with a touch of pink in its blossoms, the Swan Lake is an excellent, disease-resistant choice.

    Yellow

    • Yellow roses can create quite a splash of color in the garden, and many lovely varieties less susceptible to powdery mildew can be found to ensure a vibrant display for years to come. Among these are the Golden Showers rose, which produces a very fragrant double blossom, and the Goldstar, which has rich yellow semi-double blooms.

    Pink

    • Pink climbers are a beautiful accent to the landscape, and can be found in a number of mildew-resistant varieties. These include the Aloha, which is an especially fragrant double rose which is a repeat bloomer, the Antique 89, also a repeat-blooming double, and the deep pink Bantry Bay, another double-blossomed repeater. The Felix Leclerc is a bright pink climber with semi-double blooms, and the Rosarium Uetersen has semi-double blooms of coral/pink tone. Both of these varieties are mildew-resistant repeat bloomers.

    Purple

    • If purple roses are your passion, there are mildew-resistant varieties to suit your fancy as well. Among these is the Night Owl, which produces single blossoms in a purple/mauve tone, and is a repeat bloomer.

    Orange

    • Adding a spark of interest to the garden is easily done with orange climbing roses. The Westerland is a repeat bloomer that produces semi-double bright orange blossoms and is not prone to powdery mildew.
