Landscape Plants for Texas

Texas is the largest state in America with a huge variety of lush and dessert landscapes, depending on the area. Texans enjoy colorful flowering plants, trees and shrubs. Some areas are more dry so you will find more dessert like plants such as cactus. However, some of the more common Texas plants are grasses such as bamboo grass and buffalo grass.
  1. Carya ovata

    • The Carya ovata, also called Shagbark Hickory is native to Texas. The Shagbark can reach heights up to 80 feet within 25 years. This tree has green foliage with yellow flowers that bloom in the spring. This tree produces edible seeds and fruit that begin growing in spring and continue until fall. The leaves of the tree do die during the winter months. The Carya ovata is a lovely tree for any Texas landscape. This tree does well in the warmer regions of Texas. All this tree needs is water and sunlight.

    Western Yarrow

    • Western yarrow, also called (Achillea millefolium var. occidentalis) is another lovely landscape plant for Texas. This plant is Native to Texas and it grows well all across the state. This plant blooms white flowers in the spring and produces seeds and fruit in the late spring. A Western yarrow plant can reach up to three feet within twenty years. The plant has green foliage and survives well in the winter. This plant is excellent for decorating a walkway or garden.

    Barrel Cacti

    • The barrel cacti grows in several regions across the United States, especially Texas. This cactus has long thorns and blooms huge flowers in the late spring. The flowers are red and yellow and can span up to 6 inches wide. The barrel cactus thrives off the Texas sun. This cacti is a lovely landscape plant because it interesting, yet beautiful. The cacti is green and globe shaped, but may appear purple in some areas. Overall the barrel cactus is short, reaching heights up to 16 inches tall. Watering is not required for this plant as it absorbs and stores water from rains that naturally occur in the environment.

    Bluebonnet

    • Bluebonnet flowers make lovely landscape plants and this plant is also the state flower for Texas. The flower blooms an abundance of blue flower cluster blooms in the spring. This plant is easy to care for, only requiring light pruning and water. The vibrant colors of the bluebonnet plant make it an excellent addition for any garden.
