Fast Growing Tall Hedges

Hedges are often used to for privacy because of the screen they create. Especially useful in communities that limit fencing options, hedges are an appealing alternative for anyone who enjoys the presence and company of plants. There are a number of different plants ideal for creating tall hedges with, and the right plant depends on each person's individual needs and situation, including climate and soil conditions.
  1. Red Rum Honeysuckle

    • Red rum honeysuckles are tall hedges that grow to be 12 to 15 feet high. Red rum honeysuckles produce white flowers that eventually turn yellow and finally into small, bright red fruit that nearby wildlife can consume. Red rum honeysuckles are shade tolerant and grow well in a number of climates.

    Boxwood Evergreen

    • Boxwood evergreens are one of the most commonly used plants for creating tall hedges. Not only do boxwood greens grow fast and tall but they are also easy to prune and shape, making them not only good privacy screens, but also nice topiary trees. There are several varieties of boxwood evergreen, with the Korean type somewhat hardier than the classic English varieties. Plant the tree in a zigzag formation to create a fuller effect, and allow the trees to get maximum air and sun, as well as a slight give in the wind, which helps prevent wind-related damage and unwanted wind tunnels.

    Thuja Green Giants

    • Thuja green giants, otherwise known as Arborvitae green giants, are fast growing evergreens that create thick and fragrant hedges that excel as privacy screens. Highly uniform and tightly formed trees, Thuja green giants don't require much pruning or maintenance and also don't overgrow and crowd valuable yard or landscaping space.

    Yew

    • Yew trees create medium height, dense hedges that also grow rather wide and respond well to regular pruning. Another highly uniform tree, yews make great walls for enclosed gardens or other highly private spaces. Yews are however not as fast growing as many other common hedge trees.

    Siberian Peashrub

    • The Siberian peashrub grows 10 to 15 feet tall and is well adapted to growing in exposed, dry or other challenging climates (hence the name).
