How to Make Planter Box Borders

If you like the look of borders around the yard or garden but aren't sure if you want a permanent placement for your plants, adding borders to planters is an easy and suitable alternative. Whether you want to add a border to a porch or patio or accentuate a walkway through a garden, decorating your yard with planter boxes offers an attractive dimension to the landscaping. If you choose later on to move plants around because of colder weather, moving planter boxes is efficient.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw out the yard on a piece of graphing paper, including walkways, driveways, steps or other features. Measure porches and patios with a tape measure to determine what size planter boxes you need to surround the area.

    • 2

Lay planter boxes down in the desired area, around seating or entertaining areas, pools, garden walkways or sidewalks and driveways.

    • 3

Fill the bottom of each planter box with ½ to one inch of gravel rocks to promote proper drainage. Add soil and fertilizer to the boxes, and add plants as desired. Make sure your plants are suited for the areas you placed the planter boxes, giving them shade, part or full sun as directed.

    • 4

Water the plants in the planter boxes after planting, and then as often as directed for full growth.
