How to Make a Wire Trellis

A foundational part for gardening architecture, a wire trellis is designed for the purpose of providing a structure for climbing plants to grow in the shape and area you want them to. A wire trellis can be built in any size you want and for the sake of growing decorative plants (like morning glories) or practical plants like tomatoes. Make a basic, inexpensive wire trellis according to the size needs of your garden, built directly into the ground for stability.

Things You'll Need

  • Wooden garden stakes
  • Rubber mallet
  • Chicken wire

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the dimensions you require for your wire trellis. Purchase wooden stakes tall enough for your height requirements.

    • 2

Drive the wooden stakes into the ground using a rubber mallet. Position them at a distance equal to the width you want for your trellis.

    • 3

Unwind the chicken wire and lay it out on a flat surface, such as a concrete floor. Unbend any areas that are puckered to flatten the wire into a sheet.

    • 4

Attach the end of a strip of chicken wire to one of the stakes using twine, then stretch it to the other end and secure there, too, wrapping the string through the holes in the wire work and all the way around the stake. Tie each piece of wire at both the bottom and the top of the edge to ensure the right angle. Adjust the height of the chicken wire as desired.

    • 5

Secure the chicken wire to the stakes with staples. Position the staple gun so that each staple straddles a piece of wire where it comes into contact with the wood. Apply staples generously to one side, then pull the opposite side more tightly against its stake before stapling there.

    • 6

Clean up the ends of the chicken wire around the stakes. Trim the edges of the wire where they protrude beyond the stakes, then using the needle-nosed pliers to curl the trimmed edges in on themselves, removing any poking hazards.

    • 7

Add a second layer of chicken wire, if necessary, above or below the first. Wrap, secure and staple it as you did the first.

    • 8

      Spray-paint the trellis, if desired.
