Spanish Moss Ideas

Contrary to its name, Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides) is neither a moss nor is it from Spain; it is actually a flowering plant belonging to the Bromeliaceae family. Native to southeastern parts of the United States, it is found clinging to tree branches and often hangs downwards forming thick blankets. People often use it in crafts and decorative projects.
  1. Halloween Decorations

    • For Halloween, create a haunted or spooky house using Spanish moss as opposed to faux cobwebs for an authentic look. Suspend clumps of moss from nails in the ceiling, over and around the banister and railing and around window frames and doors for an overgrown appearance. If making faux graves, hang it from tombstones for added effect. Also, place moss around the base of containers, lamps and other items over tables to give the feel of an unused house now inhabited by spiders and bats.

    Plant Containers

    • Place Spanish moss around the edges of a hanging basket and allow it to trail downwards for added effect. Not only does it hide the visible rims but acts like natural "skirting" and enhances the appearance of the spot. Hang bits of moss to hang off edges of new planters, pots or urns so it gives the selected container a rustic and authentic look.

    Artificial Terrarium

    • A terrarium is an enclosed container designed to house small animals and plants in monitored conditions. People add real and artificial objects to the terrarium to stimulate the environment they prefer such as a rain forest, jungle, desert, beach and everything in between. Use Spanish moss to create an artificial terrarium, only for decorative purposes, and include tiny rocks, small twigs and other items that depict a forest scene. Place the terrarium on the table to form an attractive centerpiece. Add jungle animal toys for added effect.

    Wreath

    • Spanish moss is often used as stuffing in twig wreaths along with seasonal berries or fresh fruit. Depending on the desired appearance, stuff the soft moss into crevices or stretch it over the twigs to create an attractive wreath for the front door or fireplace. Glue accents to the wreath that reflect the spirit of the occasion, such as tiny pumpkins if making a Halloween wreath, or tiny faux gifts for a Christmas wreath.

    Filler

    • Once fresh or artificial flowers are added to floral foam in the basket, arrangers commonly cover visible gaps with Spanish moss to provide instant color and a more authentic looking arrangement. Spanish moss is also packed into wire topiary frames to provide instant color and a fuller appearance while ivy or another trailing plant is growing and can eventually cover the frame.
