Perennial ground covers die down at soil level every winter and return in the spring. Perennial ground covers that are ideal for rapid coverage include ajuga (also known as bugleweed), crownvetch, gouts' weed, vinca, English ivy and winecups.
Low-growing shrubs can cover an area and provide winter interest when perennial ground covers are dormant. Woody plants ideal for use as ground cover plants include creeping juniper, dwarf forsythia, rock spray cotoneaster and wintercreeper.
To achieve best growth out of the plants you select, pay attention to the details of the site you wish to cover. Choose plants suited for the sun the area receives, the hardiness zone in which you live and the soil conditions of the planting area.
