Fast Growing Trees or Hedges

Using plants to create screens or hedges is a natural way to obtain privacy. Fast growing plants help create a screen in less time. Choose plants well suited to the soil conditions and sun exposure of the area for best performance.
  1. Screens

    • Trees create natural screens useful for blocking wind and adding privacy. Fast growing plants that are ideal for use as tall screens include concolor fir, rocky mountain juniper, eastern red cedar, red maple, arborvitae and eastern white pine.

    Hedges

    • Incorporate shorter plants with taller plants to add variety to a natural screen, or use them alone to create a hedge. Plants that are shorter and useful for planting as a hedge include privet, cinquefoil, holly, barberry, Chinese juniper and sweet bay magnolia.

    Considerations

    • When selecting plant material, be aware of your hardiness zone -- a number representing the lowest average temperature in your area -- and select plants listed as hardy in your zone. Follow recommendations for proper plant spacing to ensure plants have enough room when mature.
