Flowers for Eastern Sun Exposure

When you are planning a garden, there are many things to recommend an eastern exposure. An eastern exposure gives plant bright light that comes down steadily between sunrise and noon. After that point, the plants still receive receive filtered light or shade for the rest of the day. An eastern exposure is gentler than a southern or western exposure while still giving bright light.
  1. Begonia

    • Begonia is a flowering plant that puts out yellow, pink, white or red flowers, all with a bright yellow center. They benefit from the bright light of an eastern exposure and they prefer moderately moist soil. When grown in containers, they prefer a high humidity and a potting medium that has a peat base. Begonias can also cope with a western exposure.

    Cyclamen

    • Cyclamens include flowers from the cyclamen genus, and they are flowers that are grown from bulbs. The cyclamen produces flowers in shades of maroon, white, red, rose and lavender, and these small flowers prefer moist conditions. They can be grown in an all-purpose gardening mix, and they provide a bright splash of color late in the season. An eastern exposure gives the cyclamen flowers protection from the heat of the afternoon sun and the filtered light in the afternoon helps preserve the moisture they require.

    Hydrangea

    • Hydrangeas are perennial shrubs that put out large dense masses of showy flowers. There are many types of hyndrangeas to choose from. Mophead hydrangeas produce mounded masses of blue, white or pink flowers, while lace caps produce flatter cluster. Panicle hydrangeas produce cones of flowers. Hydrangeas prefer partial shade, so plant them on an eastern exposure beside a building or a fence. This ensures that the hydrangea gets the strong morning light provided by an eastern exposure, while remaining sheltered from the hotter light in the afternoon.

    Angelwing Jasmine

    • Angelwing jasmine is a flowering climber, and it is a plant that blooms during the spring and the summer. It is a light-loving plant, and it is suitable for southern exposures as well as eastern exposures. Angelwing jasmine likes cooler temperatures with high humidity and a soil that is kept moist. Due to the filtered light of the eastern exposure, the soil retains the moisture preferred by the Angelwing jasmine. They produce night-blooming, snow-white flowers shaped like pinwheels. These flowers are fragrant and they are about 2 inches across. It can be used as a landscaping shrub and it blooms profusely when it is heavily pruned. As it is a climber, it can also be used to cover a fence or a trellis.
