Australian Groundcover Plants

Groundcovers add visual interest to bare patches in a yard, and prevent weeds from cluttering up your garden. If you want to add a splash of color to your yard, consider the wide variety of groundcovers from Australia. Australia groundcovers are hardy and add visual interest to your garden.
  1. Creeping Boobialla

    • Creeping boobialla, also known as Myoporum parvifolium, is a low-growing shrub that spreads 10 to 13 feet. It produces thick, oblong leaves and bell-shaped flowers that are white with purple dots inside the petals. It flowers over the summer, and after the flowers drop, it produces round, purple fruits. Victorian Resources Online notes that it is native to Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania.

    Grevillea poorinda Royal Mantle

    • The Royal Mantle variety of Grevillea poorinda is a hardy groundcover with thick, coppery-red foliage. The foliage is the most impressive part of the plant, but it also produces spikes of densely-colored red flowers. Each plant of this variety has an impressive spread, so position each plant at least 10 feet away from the others. Burke's Backyard recommends this native plant as a good one for most parts of Australia.

    Running Postman

    • According to the Australian Native Plants Society, running postman, Kennedia prostrata, is a species with a range that encompasses southern Australia from south Western Australia to northeastern New South Wales. This plant produces gray-green leaves, with wavy margins and small red flowers. It is a sprawling plant that does well in moist, well-drained soils and it prefers a sunny or semi-shaded environment.

    Eremophila subteretifolia

    • Eremophila subteretifolia is a sprawling shrub that produces thick leaves and orange, tube-shaped flowers throughout the summer and autumn. It grows to be only 4 inches tall, with a spread between 4 and 8 feet. This groundcover is native to Western Australia, and it resistant to both frost and cold. According to Oz Native Plants, it attracts honeyeater birds.
