Is Pampas Grass a Perennial?

Pampas grass is an ornamental grass that can be annual or perennial depending on the type of pampas grass and where it's grown.
  1. Types

    • One of the most popular types is Cortaderia selloana, which is a clump-forming grass that can grow 10 feet in one growing season. This type of pampas grass is an annual, according to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension Horticulture.

    Considerations

    • Another type is Cortaderia selloana Pumila, also known as dwarf pampas grass. It usually grows to about 3 feet. According to the Colorado State University Extension, dwarf and more cold hardy types of tender pampas grass may be semi-perennial after they are established in the warmest parts of Climate Zone 5 (where lowest temperatures reach minus 20 to minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit).

    Perennial Pampas Grass

    • An example of a perennial pampas grass is the relatively new Silver Comet pampas grass. It has single white bands of variegation that extend along the margins of the leaves.
