Can the Date Palm Tree Grow in Northern California?

The date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) sustains frond damage when temperatures drop to 20 degrees Fahrenheit but the plant itself survives in temperatures down to 5 degrees. It successfully grows in Northern California, but only where winters aren't too cold.
  1. Geography

    • Date palm is appropriate to grow in Northern California in the Central Valley, from Redding to Sacramento. It's also hardy along the coast and coastal ranges west from Crescent City to Willow Creek to Ukiah to Fairfield.

    Growing Considerations

    • The warmer the climate the better for the date palm, especially if you want faster growth or female plants to flower and later bear ripe dates. Plant the date palm in full sun exposure in a fertile but well-drained soil. Keep soil slightly drier in winter, especially where light frosts may occur.

    Insight

    • The date palm isn't the only date palm species that may grow in Northern California. In warmer winter areas, the Canary Island date palm (Phoenix canariensis) and silver date palm (Phoenix sylvestris) may also become impressive landscape specimens.
