The symptoms of a pest infestation depend upon the creature responsible. When lace bugs are at work devouring the foliage and stems of a red buckeye, the leaves take on a whitish look and there is noticeable damage to the stems. Darkened, tiny droppings on the underneath surface of the leaves are also present.

Larger pests, such as the Japanese beetle, are obvious enough to pick off the shrub by hand and placed in a container of soapy water.
