How to Grow Foxtails

The foxtail fern is a variety of Sprenger's asparagus with the scientific name Asparagus densiflorus Myers. It is not a true fern and has cone-shaped fronds that resemble a fox's tail. Gardeners use foxtails as an ornamental plant in gardens and it is suitable as an indoor plant for cooler climates. This plant is also a common component in flower arrangements. Foxtails are generally hardy and require little care once established.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a planting site for foxtails. They can grow outside in U.S. Department of Agriculture hardiness zones 9a and higher. These plants should be in partial shade where they have protection from the afternoon sun, especially in warmer areas.

    • 2

Place the plant in a pot large enough to accommodate the foxtail's tuber. Add potting soil until it completely covers the tuber. The precise soil composition is not critical as long as it drains well.

    • 3

Water the foxtail thoroughly to remove any air pockets in the soil. Keep the soil moist but not wet until the foxtail establishes its root system. This plant should be highly tolerant of drought after this point.

    • 4

Place the foxtail on an eastern windowsill if you keep it inside. You can also place the plant outside as long as no danger of frost exists. Apply a water-soluble fertilizer in spring and summer. Trim the plant's foliage with pruning shears in the early spring to stimulate growth.

    • 5

Repot a foxtail into a larger pot when the roots push the soil 1 to 2 inches above its original level. You can also divide the plant into multiple sections with a saw when you remove it from the pot.
