How to Landscape With Succulents

Succulents are hardy plants that require little water and care. Common succulents used in landscaping are sempervivum (hens and chicks), sedum, aeonium, and kalanchoe. Add succulents to the landscape in late summer or early fall when many plants begin looking tired. The lush foliage and flower colors fill in spaces in the garden to give you a beautiful garden all year long.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant succulents in problem areas where other plants find it hard to grow. Succulents need little water, which allows them to thrive on slopes and dry spots in full sun.

    • 2

Mix succulents with other plants to add color and texture to your garden. Succulents have thick leaves in colors that include greens, purples, pinks and reds. Sedums have thick green foliage that gives way to broad flower heads of white, yellow, orange, pink or red.

    • 3

Plant succulents in masses to create a uniform garden. Hens and chicks are low-growing rosettes of color that can be planted in groupings to create a maintenance-free garden.

    • 4

Fill containers with succulents and arrange them around the garden. Since succulents are used to arid conditions, pots filled with succulent plants will not need to be watered daily like other potted plants.
