How to Work Latifolium Grass in Your Landscape

Latifolium grass, also known as Northern sea oats, is a type of hardy ornamental grass that works well in many soil conditions and tolerates a variation of sun exposure. The tips of the grass are reminiscent of oat, and the red-brown color of the grass complements any landscape design. While you can use latifolium grass anywhere in the landscape, its aggressive growth makes it ideal to place in areas of the yard where you wish to have complete coverage.

Instructions

    • 1

Place latifolium grass on hillsides or large areas of the yard you wish to cover. For a hillside subject to erosion, plant latifolium grass throughout the area. Roots from the grass spread and interlock as they grow, acting as a net for the soil and work to keep the hillside in place.

    • 2

Remove the seed tips at the close of the growing season to prevent the seeds from spreading to the rest of the landscape. If you want to use the grass in a garden setting as a border or wall cover, pluck the seeds off the grass at the end of fall to prevent blown seedlings from creating an overgrowth in the landscape at the start of spring.

    • 3

Space latifolium grass 2 to 3 feet apart along walls or borders to provide room to spread out. The grass is very dense towards the roots, so there's no need to place flowers or low-profile shrubs in front of the grass.

    • 4

Place the ornamental grass in containers to place around the driveway or entryway to enhance curb appeal. Use the grass in pots or containers around a patio to provide privacy and greenery to any outdoor entertaining space.
