How to Control Hordeum Jubatum

Squirrel or foxtail grass (Hordeum jubatum) is a decorative perennial grass. It thrives in damp or dry soil with full sun or partial shade. It grows wild along the edges of swampy areas, along the sides of railways and on the outskirts of pastures. Although attractive, the plumes of grass can quickly invade your garden areas if left unchecked.

Instructions

    • 1

Yank a tuft of foxtail grass out of the soil with your hand. Grasp it firmly around its base and slowly pull the plant upward and out of the soil. It will not regenerate, as long as the seed pods and roots are removed. Rake up the debris and place it in a wheelbarrow for disposal.

    • 2

Cultivating your garden areas biweekly with a hoe keeps foxtail grass outside the planting spaces. Each foxtail grass plant produces up to 180 seeds. Carried on the wind, the seeds often land in flower beds.

    • 3

Spray large, unruly tracts of foxtail grass with glyphosate. Choose a windless day and begin spraying from one end of the tract to the other. Waiting 48 hours gives the herbicide ample time to work. Check for any foxtail grass you may have missed and spray again.
